Wyntercon 5 - Photos from 2018
So what is Wyntercon?
For those new to events like Wyntercon Cosplay is abbreviated from Costume Play, so and event where you (optionally, but highly recommended) dress up as someone or something else, most commonly a character from TV, films, computer games or comic books, which gives you a chance to have lots of fun. There are very few limits (must be family friendly and probably not a good idea to wear something too offensive!) so let your imagination run wild. You DON'T have to look the character, you can just be inspired by one, you don't need to be the same size, colour or even gender (that's known as crossplay) as who you want to be.
I was kindly invited to come along and take photos of the event by the organisers. Wyntercon is a really great event and one I am very proud to be associated with. This was my third year, I attended 2015, 2016 and 2018, I sadly wasn't up to going to 2017 and the original back in 2014 I didn't know much about. The weather was pretty bad the day I went (Saturday), but luckily it was held in an extremely huge tent!
The Wyntercon Mission Statement
I truly believe that is how the organisers feel. It doesn't matter if you want to cosplay or just turn up as you are. You can cosplay characters everyone knows or create one of your own. You can spend thousands on your costume or make it for a couple of pounds. Height, weight, colour, gender, sexuality, health, religion etc. are all unimportant, you are all welcome. I turned up the first day of the 2016 one dressed as Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad and I felt welcome and accepted, please bare in mind that I was in my early 40's, overweight, disabled and male! The only important rule for costumes is that it has to be family friendly as there are many children there. Bullying is definitely not allowed, if you see ever it happening please report it to a worker, we want it to be a fun day and a safe place for everybody.
My costume for Wyntercon 2018 was my own creation based on Malificent! Sadly we got half way there and realised my wings were hanging up on the back of the door at home :( So I had the horns and some make up that was far from perfect and was dressed all in black for most of the day, but I was happy and really enjoyed being an official part of Wyntercon again.
My plans for 2019? I'm going as a . . . you will have to wait and see! I will say it's one that will actually make taking photos easier! ;) If I can get everything to work! lol
The official Wyntercon website is http://www.wyntercon.org plus there is a Facebook page too.
Wyntercon 6 will be held on the 28th and 29th of September 2019 and will be at the great new location: Eastbourne Sports Park, which will have better parking, something I heard a couple of complaints about at the 2018 one.
Hopefully these photos will inspire you to come along and join us all having a great fun weekend, I definitely won't be missing it, I don't get many chances to let my inner nerd loose in the outside world :)
I look forward to seeing lots of new people there!
Please note that that anything said on this page apart from the mission statement and official description are my own opinions, not official ones of Wyntercon, they are not responsible if anybody doesn't like something on this page!
All of these photos were all taken at Wyntercon 5 in 2018, held at Princes Park in Eastbourne, East Sussex by Dean Thorpe (me!). Feel free to share this page or the photos from it, all I ask is that you don't make profit from them (all my work is 100% non profit!) and that you only use them in respectful ways, not causing offence to people in them or to anybody involved with Wyntercon.
